Re: Literatura brytyjska- notatki na egzamin

Odp do pytan od dr Pytel : 7 - 16

7.How is the cross presented in The Dream of the Rood?

The cross is very high, shines, was gilded with gold and gems, it changes colours, vesture, it changes the appearance. The cross was a tree in the forest and sb came and cut it down. Than it was taken into hill in order to be made a gallows. It was taken to the hill(Golgota) when they pierced it(Crucifiction of Christ). After that it was burried. Many years later sb found the cross.
Feelings of the cross during crucifiction: wet with blood, outstretched in agony, “they mocked us both”-cross identifies with Christe empathy, cross is suffering, cross is like a warrior, retainer.
At the end cross say: If you believe in cross you will be saved.

8.What are the meanings of the pearl in the 14th c. poem entitled The Pearl?

The pearl may be a woman : Margarita : Margaret / a narrator is a lover
The pearl “dead daughter” / a narrator – father
The pearl is : a gem / narrator is a jeweler , purity , seed.
The pearl significance eternal life !
The pearl – individual soul ( soul that is pure)

9. Describe the place where the narrator in The Pearl falls asleep and the place he sees in his dream.

It's August ( nature is “dying”) There are a lot of flowers/herbs, the flowers are grown on grave. The beauty of flower is passing away. The beauty of the pearl is constant/permanent.
Pearl, falls asleep in an "erber grene" - a green garden - and begins to dream. In his dream he is transported to an other-worldy garden; the divine is thus set in opposition to the terrestrial, a persistent thematic concern within the poem. Wandering by the side of a beautiful stream, he becomes convinced paradise is on the other shore.

( tu jeszcze brakuje opisu.. )

10.Compare “The Knight’s Tale” with “The Miller’s Tale.”

http://web.cn.edu/kwheeler/documents/Knight_Miller.pdf

11.Give a definition and an example of the fabliau

A fabliau (plural fabliaux) is a comic, often anonymous tale written by jongleurs in northeast France between ca. 1150 and 1400 .Fabliaux originally come from the Orient and were brought to the West by returning crusaders

12.What is the title of the earliest English poem? When was it composed? What is it about?

Cædmon's Hymn is a short Old English poem originally composed by Cædmon, an illiterate cowherd, in honour of God the Creator. It was designed to be sung aloud and was never physically recorded by Cædmon himself, but was written and preserved by other literate individuals. The Hymn itself was composed between 658 and 680, recorded in the earlier part of the 8th century, and survives today in at least 14 verified manuscript copies.

Trzeba dopisac jeszcze o czym to jest ..

13. What are the runes and how were they used in England?

Runes are letters in a family of ancient alphabets known as runic alphabets. Runes were used as a method of communication across Scandinavia and in other Germanic nations from around the 3rd century CE to around the 13th century, when they were displaced by the Roman alphabet. Thousands of examples of runic inscriptions can be found in stones, coins, and artwork. Runes are also used by some people as a tool for divination, since these individuals believe that runes have mysterious powers.  The word “rune” is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word which means “secret,” or “mystery.”
Cynewulf - Posterity knows of his name by means of runic signatures that are interwoven into the four poems which comprise his scholastically recognized corpus.

14. What is the second monster Beowulf fights? Why does he fight it?

Beowulf fights with GRENDEL'S MOTHER -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beowulf

15. What is a kenning? Give an example.

is a type of literary trope, specifically circumlocution, in the form of a compound (usually two words, often hyphenated) that employs figurative language in place of a more concrete single-word noun. Kennings are strongly associated with Old Norse and later Icelandic and Anglo-Saxon poetry. For example, Old Norse poets might replace sverð, the regular word for “sword”, with a more abstract compound such as “wound-hoe”.
Exaples of kennings from Beowulf:
Whale-Road = ocean
War-gear = armor
Gold-Friend (good friend)

16. What is oral-formulaic poetry?

Works created by combining and making up formulas which enabled a creator to memorize his work, example: “Holly creator” for God.

Re: Literatura brytyjska- notatki na egzamin

odpowiedzi na pytania 17-22

17.What is the metrical system of  Old English poetry?

4 beats-caesura-alliteration

-        alliterative verse, with four beats per line, divided by a caesura in the middle
Beowulf : "Oft Scyld Scefing \\ sceaþena þreatum" (l. 4).

The metric system of Old English poetry was different from that of modern English, and more related to the verse forms of most of older Germanic languages. It used alliterative verse, a metrical pattern involving varied numbers of syllables but a fixed number (usually four) of strong stresses in each line. The unstressed syllables were relatively unimportant, but the caesurae played a major role in Old English poetry.[3]
Caesura( średniówka) -
1. (Literature / Poetry) (in modern prosody) a pause, esp for sense, usually near the middle of a verse line. Usual symbol
2. (Literature / Poetry) (in classical prosody) a break between words within a metrical foot, usually in the third or fourth foot of the line

18. How was love presented in medieval literature?

Fin’amours-refined( wytworny, oczyszczony) -ennobling-love -worship-feudal terms-religious terms-leading to divine (boski) love-religion of love-heresy of love-martys( cierpiętnik)  of love –fol (szalony)amours –disease

-nigdzie nie moge tego znaleźć

19. What is the chivarlic romance? What were its three chief “matters”? Name three medieval romances.

Adventures-chivarlic-amorous-France( Charlemagne)- Britian(Arthur)- Rome(Troy, Thebes)

Chivarlic romance: chivalric and amorous adventures of the knights,

-    the matter of France –Charlemagne, Roncevaux, Roland,
-    the matter of Britain (Brittany) –the Arthurian legend: the knights of the Round Table: Gawain, Lancelot, Guinevere, Perceval, Galahad, Tristram and Isault, and the so-called Breton lays
-    the matter of Rome: the Troy story, the story of Thebes, and the stories of Alexander the Great,

Layamon, Brut, (12th c)
King Horn, c.1225
The Lay of Havelok the Dane, c.1300
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (14th) : alliterative, written in stanzas. It varies long lines with the rhyming “bob and wheel”; a bob is a two syllable line, wheel – a set of short lines – together they comment on the action of the stanza preceding them.

chivalric romance [shi‐val‐rik], the principal kind of romance found in medieval Europe from the 12th century onwards, describing (usually in verse) the adventures of legendary knights, and celebrating an idealized code of civilized behaviour that combines loyalty, honour, and courtly love.
Fin’s amorous (Courtly love )was a medieval European conception of nobly and chivalrously expressing love and admiration.[1] Generally, courtly love was secret and between members of the nobility.[2] It was also generally not practiced between husband and wife.[2][3]
The emphasis on heterosexual love and courtly manners distinguishes it from the chanson de geste and other kinds of epic, in which masculine military heroism predominates. The most famous examples are the Arthurian romances recounting the adventures of Lancelot, Galahad, Gawain, and the other Round Table knights. These include the Lancelot (late 12th century) of Chrétien de Troyes, the anonymous Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (late 14th century), and Malory's prose romance Le Morte Darthur (1485).

20. Give a definition and an example of the dream vision poem.

Dream-beautiful place-spring- instruction-allegorical or symbolic figures- allegorical plot-battle

Dream vision: a popular poetic form, its fictional time is usually spring. The poet falls asleep in some beautiful place, a wood or a garden to the music of a stream  and the song of birds. He dreams of “real” people or personified abstractions, who illuminate for him the nature of some aspect of knowledge, mode of behaviour, or social or political question.
The oldest dream visions were Latin poems like Cicero's Somnium Scipionis ("The Dream of Scipio"), in which the younger Roman politician, Scipio, dreams he is visited and instructed by his ancestor, Scipio Africanis, who defeated Hannibal of Carthage.
Other examples of the dream vision poems:
Guillaume de Lorris and Jean de Meun, The Romance of the Rose, 13th c
John Gower, Confessio Amantis, 14th c.
William Langland, Piers Ploughman, 14th c
The Pearl, 14th c
Thomas Usk, The Testament of Love, 14th c.

Dream vision poems by Geoffrey Chaucer (1340s-1400)
The Book of the Duchess
The Parliament of Fowls
The House of Fame

The Legend of Good Women

Na pewno courtly love, bo występuję w czystej postaci w Knight's Tale i jej dokładne przeciwieństwo w Miller's Tale.

przerabiam pytania od dr Pytel, czy ktoś wie jak w drugim pytaniu wykorzystać słówko grip?

Beowulf is human but also has the strength, "grip," of thirty men

Grip to uścisk, chwyt, więc ogólnie chodzi o to, że Beowulf ma siłę 30 ludzi.

Re: Literatura brytyjska- notatki na egzamin

mi sie wydaje, że było mówione, ze jesli była konkretna data, to trzeba znać konkretną date; a jak tylko ogólnie wiek  jest znany to tylko wiek trzeba napisac no ale moge sie mylić.
